Thu Mar 15First Aid Kit
The dulcet tones of Swedish sister-act First Aid Kit permeated The Standard’s room on balmy Thursday night, pacifying the sold-out audience with the lulling ballads and bluegrass-inflected tunes from their countrified sophomore record The Lion’s Roar. The youthful Söderberg siblings, Johanna and Klara, sing of bittersweet memories in woodsy, nu-folk songs like Heavy Storm and In The Hearts of Men, their inborn harmonies intertwining with a strumming guitar, lush keys and a hint of drums.
Channeling the true essence of America’s golden era, the nostalgic duo treated the enamoured crowd to Emmylou; a beautiful tribute to their ‘60s country music idols and legendary lovers, which name-checks Gram Parsons and Emmylou Harris, and Johnny Cash and June Carter. But the real zenith of the night was the ethereal, unplugged recital of Ghost Town, which First Aid Kit demanded complete silence for and tiptoed to the brink of the stage, with nothing but two mic-less chorals and six strings in hand. The crowd was rendered speechless at first, but gradually chimed in with the singing of the mournful song and swayed in adoration, creating quite the campfire moment and a howl of appraisal at the end.
The rest of the heartwarming set was laced with upbeat, stomping folk tracks such as Wolf and The Lion’s Roar, as well as a welcome cover of fellow Swede Fever Ray’s song When I Grow Up. With their hair-swinging passion, beaming smiles and comical banter with the assemblage, it was obvious the girls had thoroughly enjoyed themselves, and left their fans with an irresistibly charming offer: “If you wanna come by at the end of the show and talk to us about anything you’re going through or any problems you may have, we’ll be there for you, we’ll be your First Aid Kit”.
