Thu Apr 19Pond
Pond may have largely been labelled as the “Tame Impala side project label”, (the bassist, Nick Allbrook, and drummer, Jay Watson, for Tame Impala are the singer and bassist in Pond, respectively) but as anyone who was there at the sold out show at the Standard can attest, where Tame Impala lulls and washes over you, Pond will electrify.
The support acts are solid with the Gooch Palms and the Laurels showing off what’s great about the Sydney music scene. The Gooch Palms are a garage rock duo consisting of Kat, a drummer in the vein of Megan White but a babe and Leroy, who whips off his shirt mid song and spontaneously launches into rapping. They are energetic and entertaining, to say the least. The Laurels also prove why they are the darlings of the music press right now, winning the crowd over with their intricate shoe gaze sounds.
All this quirkiness sets the scene just right for Pond to come on and show off their tight live act, well honed from heavily touring the States, including much buzzed-about appearances at SXSW. Nick Allbrook is an energetic hippie of a front man, relishing the spotlight as he alternates between screaming and mumbling indiscernibly into the mic, crowd surfs multiple times and yells at the crowd demanding his shoe and cardigan back, which went missing amongst the crowd surf melee. The crowd loves “You Broke My Cool”, the perfect psychedelic pop tune that MGMT wishes they wrote, with the whole audience grooving and dancing wildly. It’s nice to see that the band have not yet reached that level where they take themselves too seriously; they graciously come out for a encore in exchange for a spliff from one of the audience members.
