Gallery Burlesque Presents…
The Land of Timania
…A Burlesque Tribute to Tim Burton
Out of the twisted collective mind of Gallery Burlesque came a night like no other, at Sydney’s The Standard, Sunday April 22nd 2012. ‘The Land of Timania’ showcased the most valuable assets of the burlesque circuit (and the performers attached to them), through a collection of thoroughly entertaining performance tributes to the work of Tim Burton.
The Standard was transformed into a darkened cave; punctuated with flashes of a montage of affected visuals from Burton films and creepy music to elicit an excited buzz among the crowd. The ever-demanding big-headed Queen (otherwise known as an elaborately costumed Legs1111, later transforming into a perfect Helena Bonham Carter for Act 2) exploded onto the stage to begin proceedings, accompanied by her delightfully nonchalant ‘worm’. Apart from performing the night’s MC duties, the pair were able to cover any minor slip-ups in time and set-up with magic tricks, anecdotes and commentary without once breaking character.
Notable acts included ‘Queen of Australian Burlesque’ Imogen Kelly, portraying Martian Girl (Mars Attacks!) in a blur of UV paint and glitter; a chocolate-drenched, sugar-coated Miss Nic as Veruca Salt (Charlie and the Chocolate Factory); Defy (and supporting hair-blowing artists) as Edward Scissorhands; and the blush-inducing pole-gymnastics of Sheena Miss Demeanour as Catwoman (Batman Returns) – after all, what could be more crowd-pleasing than a pole-dancing beauty in a skin-tight leather catsuit?
Special mention should be made to the Timanian prop, costume and makeup design. Herbie Strangelove was a perfect Beetlejuice; Christopher Hawkins was a delicious Depp doppelganger as Sweeney Todd, Venus Vamp was perfectly painted up as a blue, crumping Corpse Bride. What was bleedingly obvious was just how well the Gallery cast function as a company of artists – each performer supported the next brilliantly, and if any transition between acts wasn’t smooth, then it was certainly smoothed-over. Overall, The Land of Timania was a brilliant burlesque bonanza – and proof of just how much creative talent exists right on our own doorstep.
